This year, 2008...Mary celebrates the making of 6,000 Nutcrackers, One at a Time, in the USA.
Mary has always loved wood and would bring home blocks from lumberyards when she accompanied her house-builder father to local lumberyards in Virginia. In 1989 Mary sketched, carved, and painted her first nutcracker which was purchased by a buyer for the American Folk Art Museum in New York City. Mary's husband cuts the blocks into the basic shapes and Mary does the rest one-by-one into these primitive looking nutcrackers. She has also expanded her original work into other primitive pieces including the creation of a tree-topper for the White House in 1996. On occasion, Mary designs and creates penny dolls, nodders and ornaments. She has been featured in many nationally recognized magazines and has been named a Best American Craftsman in "Early American Life". Mary has also been featured by Colonial Williamsburg where she has demonstrated her craft several times.
